Jenkins Hall at Georgia Military College wins 2020 Excellence in Rehabilitation Award

For more than 40 years, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has recognized projects and individuals in the State who have made significant contributions to the field of historic preservation. The Georgia Trust’s Preservation Awards Committee reviews projects in the categories of Restoration, Rehabilitation, Sustainable Rehabilitation, Preservation, Stewardship and Preservation Service. 

Georgia Military College's Jenkins Hall was selected as the winner for the 2020 Excellence in Rehabilitation Award, which recognizes projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.

Jenkins Hall represents a significant piece of history in both Milledgeville and Baldwin county over the last 90 years. Located on the historic Old Capitol Square, Jenkins Hall was originally built as the Grammar School for Georgia Military College in 1926.

GSFIC managed the construction project with the building’s historic significance in mind. The renovation included faculty offices and academic classrooms, and the construction of a dining hall and cafeteria annex. While the grammar school underwent several renovations since its beginning, much of its historic character remained intact. The space now serves as the home for GMC's Preparatory Academy for grades 3-12.

Each year, the Preservation Awards ceremony is held during the weekend of The Georgia Trust Spring Ramble. Awards are presented on the basis of the contributions of the person or project to the community and/or state and on compliance to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
